The Faculty of Sociology and Social Work offers academic qualifications in the fields of Sociology, Social Anthropology, Human Resources and Social Work. Students may opt for studying in Romanian or Hungarian. Each year, some courses are held in English and welcome international students.
In a dynamic academic environment, sensitive to the surrounding social reality, we try to nurture the tradition of interactive learning and the collaboration between students and teachers in various research and social intervention projects.
Our graduates work as expert-consultants in the marketing or human resource departments of public and private institutions, researchers in social survey agencies, journalists, social workers, school counselors, teachers in the secondary or higher education.
The first Sociology Department in Cluj-Napoca was established in 1922 at the “King Ferdinand” University, within the Philosophy Section of the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. After the instauration of state socialism, academic studies in the fields of social sciences and humanities became ideologically loaded and heavily restricted.
At the Cluj university centre, social research was kept alive thanks to the efforts of a small group of scholars working alongside the late professor Ioan Aluas. They would later lay the foundation of our present faculty.
Shortly after the change of the political regime, the “Babes-Bolyai” University reopened the specializations in the fields of Sociology and Social Work. Incorporated initially within the Faculty of History and Philosophy, the Sociology Department and the Social Work Department formed together a new faculty in 2001.
