PROJECT PRESENTATION  
THE SOCIAL DIAGNOSIS OF SCHOOL PERFORMANCE USING THE SCHOOL SUCCESS PROFILE * (SSP-RO) AND THE DESIGN OF RESEARCH BASED INTERVENTION METHODS

The main objective of the project is to identify and to evaluate effective techniques for influencing the social aspects of school success. The scientific objective of the project is to study the social factors of school success and to develop research based intervention methods. The pragmatic objective is to build the logistics for a comprehensive evaluation, which can be followed by scientifically validated interventions and educational policies to improve school success of children in the areas evaluated by the instrument. The final objective is to include SSP-RO in the educational policies at a national level, as a school risk evaluation procedure, as an instrument for reducing negative factors that influence school performance, and as a procedure for school progress evaluation. We believe that our research will help evaluate Romanian schools, considering factors such as the role of support received from parents, classmates and teachers; violence in families, schools, and community; other risk factors in the family; problems with alcohol and drugs; and interethnic conflicts. The project is the result of a partnership between Babes-Bolyai University, project coordinator, and University of West, Timisoara – Center for researching parent-child relations (CICOP); "Lucian Blaga" University, Sibiu; Piteşti University; "Iuliu Hatieganu" University, Pediatric Psychiatry Department; Resource Center for Roma Communities (CRCR); Civic Movement Organization (CEMO). COOPERATION We are in cooperation with the School of Social Work, North Carolina University, Chapel Hill, USA. A team of Romanian researchers has visited Chapel Hill, and observed the research methods as well as the results obtained by UNC in working with SSP. We have found out about the new instruments developed by the SSP team – for elementary school, for example. The team has also learned about a wide range of evidence based intervention methods and their applicability for different target groups.

In finding international consultants we have also looked to Oxford University, Social Welfare Department. The researchers in the department and their International Center for Parenting will offer us suggestions to develop School Social Work and orient us to practices that improve parents’ involvement in children’s school success.
