Antropology

By gaining insight into communities hidden from the superficial gaze, the anthropologist is able to gain a new perspective on his or hers own culture and way of life. In this program students learn to question what is taken for granted and to engage in field research, community development projects and cultural management.

Objectives

Students will gain in-depth knowledge on the form societies take and how they function, a wide range of concepts, theories, ideas and methodologies that will allow them to critically formulate ontologies of the social world and epistemologies through which to understand it, as well as the assimilation and solid mastery of a coherent set of research methods and techniques that will enable them to collect and analyse quantitative, qualitative and ethnographic data; Developing the relevant skills required by a technical job, such as documentarian, individual interview operator, group interview moderator, data analyst operator; Developing the ability to initiate, design, manage and complete field surveys or anthropological research:  problematisation, choosing the research field (population, sample, subjects), conceptualization, operationalization, data collection and analysis (e.g. the quantitative or qualitative evaluation of a program; the identification of resources and obstacles in the development of a community, etc.); Developing a set of lifelong transferable attitudes and skills (cognitive, communication, interactional and civic, self-knowledge and self-organization), which can be used outside the academic environment and which are highly rated by employers and community members; Developing a transferable knowledge and skills base that will give students a sense of direction in both their education and career, that will allow them to continue their studies and enrol in a master’s degree in sociology/anthropology or a related specialization (psychology, economics, political science, communication sciences, education sciences, legal sciences) in the country or abroad;

Acquired competencies

  • Describing concepts, theories, paradigms and methodologies used in the research of organizations, communities, cultural and ethnic diversity, community development;
  • Formulating hypotheses and operationalization of key concepts for explaining and interpreting different social phenomena regarding organizations and communities;
  • Identifying methods, techniques, procedures and research tools appropriate for researching various social phenomena and collecting empirical data;
  • Analysis of empirical data and critical and constructive evaluation of one’s own research approach, of the theories and methodologies used for the research of communities and organizations;
  • Developing innovative models for researching social phenomena in organizations and communities, cultural and ethnic diversity and community development through the use of established methodologies;
  • Using specific software to solve typical problems for managing databases with social indicators;
  • Construction and assessment of social indicators relevant for social research;
  • Creating and managing databases with social indicators;
