Applied Sociology for Local Development (in Hungarian)

The Master’s program offers students the opportunity to deepen the theoretical, methodological and practical knowledge required in the field of territorial and local development, as well as knowledge of regional and rural development. Students will be familiarized with local and regional development indicators, with the interpretation of various international reports and data sources, and will be introduced to the essential aspects of the structure and elaboration of local and regional development strategies. The degree can be used by employees of local administrations, development and urban planning offices, as well as by consulting companies. Enrollment in the program does not require specific basic qualifications, but fundamental knowledge in economics and social sciences is useful.

Objectives

The aim of the program is to provide useful knowledge and skills to those who work or wish to work in the fields of local or regional development. The following fields will be covered:

the foundations of urban planning;
urban development models;
rural development policies;
good practices in local development;
population surveys;
regional and territorial analyses;
integrated development strategies;
participatory planning;
impact studies;
the functioning of local institutions;
the laws of changes on the labor market.

Acquired competencies

Professional skills:

in-depth knowledge of concepts, theories and methodologies regarding the description, analysis and explanation of rural/urban development processes and local institutions;
designing and carrying out sociological research to high scientific standards;
analyzing and interpreting empirical data resulting from qualitative and quantitative research by using appropriate sociological methods and techniques;
competent use of procedures and computer programs based on social indicators;
ability to develop and evaluate local or regional development studies and strategies, in the social and human capital fields.

Transversal skills:

capitalizing on acquired knowledge and methods in diverse social contexts and activities;
written and oral communication for professional purposes in an international language and the ability to work effectively in different cultural contexts;
competent use of computers and new technologies in professional activities specific to the field, as well as for professional communication activities;
efficient work in transdisciplinary teams on various hierarchical levels, at intra- and inter-organizational levels.
