Labour and social transformations
This sociological research master’s program proposes a critical perspective on labour in contemporary societies. It offers students an overview of the latest transformations on the labour market, the reconfiguration of professional fields, and the dynamics between employees and employers. Labour relations are profoundly impacted by contemporary processes such as digitization and the advancement of artificial intelligence, transnational migration, the aggravation of social inequalities, the escalation of political tensions and conflicts, and the reconfiguration of global production chains. Depending on factors like nationality, citizenship, gender, or “race,” some groups are rewarded while others are exploited in this unequal global economy. The program incorporates a variety of theoretical perspectives, public policy considerations, and empirical research applied to the Romanian and worldwide environment, all of which stem from the notion that labour research is crucial for comprehending modern society.
We will explore topics such as the role of the state in protecting or making workers vulnerable, professional changes under the neoliberal economy, “creative” and digital work, new forms of collective organization and trade unionism, the impact of unemployment on populations, personal and professional development programs that shape workers’ subjectivities and the effects of labour on physical and mental health.
Students will conduct research and professional practice projects, thoroughly examining the existing labor relations and organizational dynamics of Romanian firms, through multidisciplinary collaborations and participation in the activities of a future Research Center for Work and Society. Students will benefit from direct interactions with specialists from various fields (human resources, labour law, social dialogue), social policy experts, representatives of administrative structures, researchers and guests from international organizations for the study of labor.
The program is committed to the concept of open science and depends on students’ active involvement in producing information that is both relevant and easily comprehensible by the public. If you are passionate about the study of labour and want to contribute to understanding and shaping social transformations, this master’s degree is for you. Prepare for the future of work!
