Dr. László Csaba Dégi is a habilitated full professor at the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, and a senior social worker licensed for independent professional practice. At the university, he serves as Ombudsman, a member of the European Network of Ombuds in Higher Education, the person responsible for managing cases of gender-based and moral workplace harassment, a member of the European HR Excellence in Research Award committee, and a member of the Scientific Council. He is also coordinator of the Biomedical Ethics/Social Medicine and Health section within the Postgraduate Program of Bio-Behavioral Integrative Medicine (UBBMed+) and a member of the Coordinating Board of the Center for Advanced Research and Comprehensive Approach to Cancer at UBB. Additionally, he is an evaluator in the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ARACIS) for Social, Political, and Communication Sciences and was formerly a member of the Research Commission of the National College of Social Workers in Romania. In 2016, the Romanian Ministry of Health appointed him as the sole member of the Committee for Social Work and Support in Oncology.
At the international level, Dr. Dégi is Chair of the European Cancer Community Foundation, Brussels, and has previously served as President of the European Cancer Organization (ECO), Executive Secretary of the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS), and Romania’s representative to the American Oncology Social Work Association (AOSW). A leading figure in psychosocial oncology, he has advocated for psychosocial oncology care across Europe and beyond, coordinated the APSCO® research project - www.psychooncology.ro - since 2001, and serves as president of the Association for Services and Communication in Oncology, affiliated with Babeș-Bolyai University. He also developed a cancer distress screening app and has an extensive record of original publications. His work has been featured in numerous international outlets, including Cancer Letter, Cancer World, Politico, and Lancet Oncology.
