Studenții Facultății de Sociologie și Asistență Socială din cadrul Universității Babeș-Bolyai, în parteneriat cu Facultatea de Sociologie și Asistență Socială, vă invită să participați în perioada 17-18 mai 2024 la Sesiunea Națională de Comunicări Științifice pentru Studenți și Masteranzi „Ecouri din Social” din Cluj-Napoca.
Sesiunea oferă studenților oportunitatea de a se implica în dezbateri privind teme actuale din științele sociale, de a primi feedback la propriile studii, a-și îmbunătăți cunoștințele în cadrul atelierelor de discuții și a cunoaște persoane cu interese similare.

Descrierea evenimentului:
Erdoğan’s uninterrupted 20 years in power presents us with a mystery. He somehow manages to serve the capitalists at the very top of the income distribution pyramid, while simultaneously securing for himself the votes from the very bottom that he needs under his regime of competitive authoritarianism. This has led to endless consternation and various reactions from the chattering classes in the middle: Some wallow in contempt for the poor, while others despair in the face of religious-nationalist ideology and the might of Erdoğan’s propaganda machine. Academics have turned to increasingly ad hoc theorizations such as “neo-patrimonial sultanism” to explain the political, and contradictions in terms such as “neoliberal populism” to explain the economic reality.
As an alternative, this talk will investigate what the material rationale might be for the bottom half of the working class reliably supporting Erdoğan over the last two decades. An analysis of the basics of his authoritarian political regime and his accompanying fake-populist cultural politics will be linked to his strategy of reshaping the national income distribution. Recent cracks in the edifice of the regime and the merits of different counter-positionings for the opposition will be discussed.
(Emrah Irzik is a sociologist who has taught at Babeş-Bolyai University and Boğaziçi University as a part-time instructor. His primary area of interest is the political economy of knowledge goods production.)
