Abstract

Creating an age-friendly society in an era defined by longevity requires a transformative shift: one that understands ageing as a multidimensional social process, not merely a biological trajectory. Social work is uniquely positioned within this transition, addressing structural inequalities, strengthening community networks, and promoting the active participation of older adults across all spheres of life. Through person-centred assessment, advocacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration, social workers ensure access to health, social, and community services, while supporting autonomy and dignity. At the community level, social work helps design inclusive environments that foster intergenerational solidarity, reduce ageism, and promote lifelong learning, digital inclusion, and meaningful participation. By integrating evidence-based practice with local knowledge and lived experience, social workers shape policies that respond to demographic change and enhance community resilience. Ultimately, social work is essential for building an age-friendly society that values diversity across the life course and supports long, healthy, meaningful lives for all generations.

Dr. Anamarija Kejžar is a researcher and practitioner specialising in ageing, long-term care, intergenerational relations, and inclusive community development. Her work bridges academic research, policy development, and frontline practice across social work and gerontology. She has coordinated and contributed to multiple national and international projects on reducing ageism, promoting healthy and active ageing, dementia and palliative-care practices, and strengthening community-based support systems. Dr. Kejžar previously served as director of two care homes, where she implemented several innovations in long-term care. She is dedicated to knowledge transfer, social-care innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the creation of age-friendly environments that empower older adults and support resilient communities.
