  • Admission to the doctorate is carried out according to the Methodology for admission to doctoral studies, approved by the annual calendar (updated each academic year). (1) In order to be eligible for admission to doctoral studies in the field of Sociology, candidates must meet the following conditions: a) to hold a master’s degree or its equivalent, in the field of Sociology or in related fields, obtained in Romania or abroad, according to the law, provided that the candidate has a total of 300 credits acquired after completing a bachelor’s program together with a master’s program or in the case of a long-term bachelor’s degree; b) to know at least one internationally circulated language at a level that allows reading the bibliography relevant to the proposed topic, proven by certificates of linguistic competence or other relevant documents; c) present a letter of recommendation from a university professor or employer, attesting to the candidate’s potential for doctoral research; d) demonstrate previous scientific interests in the field of Social Sciences, materialized through: works published in specialized journals or presented at conferences; participation in research projects; master’s dissertation relevant to the field of the proposed thesis. (2) Candidates who do not meet the criterion in letter d) may be accepted based on a portfolio that proves their research potential and the skills necessary to complete a doctoral thesis, upon the recommendation of the doctoral supervisor. (3) The admission exam consists of the following tests:
    a) Written specialty test, based on a topic announced on the faculty website in the Doctoral School section (https://socasis.ubbcluj.ro/admitere/doctorat/) by the doctoral supervisor at least two months before the date of the admission competition; b) An interview, during which the candidate’s scientific interests, previous academic performance and the proposed topic for the doctoral thesis are analyzed. (4) The admission average is calculated as follows: 50% written test score; 50% interview score.
    (5) Candidates who have obtained outstanding results in international competitions or who have publications indexed in international databases may receive additional points at the interview, according to the grid established annually by the doctoral school council.
  • Only graduates with a master’s degree or its equivalent are entitled to apply for the admission contest for doctoral studies, and the total number of transferable credits earned during both the bachelor’s and master’s study cycles must be at least 300. According to the provisions of the Higher Education Law no. 199/2023, with subsequent amendments and completions, the bachelor’s degree of graduates from long-cycle higher education programs prior to the implementation of the three Bologna cycles is equivalent to a master’s degree in the respective field. Consequently, holders of long-cycle higher education diplomas are entitled to enroll in doctoral studies without being required to complete a master’s program. Admission to a doctoral program in a given field is not conditional on the field in which the bachelor’s or master’s degree was obtained. The total cumulative duration of the bachelor’s and master’s study cycles must amount to at least 300 transferable credits (ECTS).

The topics proposed by doctoral supervisors cover a wide range of social phenomena, through an approach that is both theoretical and fundamental, as well as applied and intervention-oriented.
